If you’re planning to visit Baix Empordà you should really note down all the must-see places in the area. This is the county of coves and cliffs, the essence of the Costa Brava. It boasts other spectacular natural areas as well, such as the Medes islands and the Montgrí massif, the Empordà wetlands, or the Gavarres and Ardenya massifs.

Many towns lie nestled between these beauty spots that are well worth a visit: the mediaeval towns of Pals, Peratallada or Monells; La Bisbal and its ceramics tradition; the seafaring town of Calella de Palafrugell, or popular tourist destinations such as Palamós, Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Castell-Platja d’Aro.

As if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also enjoy an agreeable climate, great cuisine, popular festivals and events, fairs and markets, megalithic and Romanesque heritage, museums… Everything you can hope to find and much more.

PALS

The town of Pals it is 1km away, is associated with many words and sensations: mediaeval, with the walled old quarter protected by the clock tower; sea, with a long, sweeping beach that invites you to take a dip with the backdrop of the Medes islands; birds, which fly over and make their nests around the ponds Basses d’en Coll, a protected area between wetlands and dunes; and rice, cultivated in acres upon acres of paddy fields and the star ingredient of many local dishes. Make sure you don’t leave Pals without savouring the experience of a great rice stew.

BEGUR

You’ll take away some great memories of your visit to Begur. The landscape is sure to feature prominently since this area boasts some of the most spectacular beauty spots on the Costa Brava. The beaches and coves, sheltered by vegetation, will make you feel like you’re in paradise. The historical centre, crowned by the mediaeval castle, or the little Romanesque town of Esclanyà, give you a sense of the exciting history of Begur. You couldn’t ask for better surroundings, with coastal footpaths ideal for hiking and an array of water sports on offer. Begur has it all, and you’ll have an unforgettable experience only at 4km.

PALAFRUGELL

At 6 km you will find Palafrugell, is one of the star attractions of Baix Empordà and the Catalan coastline. Its beaches (Tamariu, Llafranc and Calella) are set in the quintessential landscape of the Costa Brava, sheltered by cliffs with their crystal-clear water. Your photos will look like picture postcards. Combine wonderful swims in the sea with strolls along the coastal footpath linking Calella and Llafranc, stopping off at the Sant Sebastià lighthouse, a must-see attraction. From there the views are stunning. And to explore the life of the town, wander the streets and alleys following in the footsteps of the writer Josep Pla, a native of Palafrugell.

L’ESTARTIT (TORROELLA DE MONTGRÍ)

Where the Montgrí massif dips its feet in the sea you’ll find L’Estartit, the coastal area of Torroella de Montgrí. This is a town whose seafaring past can still be savoured and where the beaches and coves share the limelight with the Medes islands. Beach lovers will enjoy the five kilometres of fine and shallow sand on the town’s main beach. If you prefer rocky coves, head to Calella cove. If you want a little of both, discover the Pedrosa cove, hidden away between pines and rocks. And if you’re a scuba diving and snorkelling enthusiast, you have the underwater paradise of the Medes islands, one of the best nature reserves in the Mediterranean.

PALAMÓS

Palamós grew around the port. In fact, the economy of this town in Baix Empordà is still sustained by the commercial, fishing and tourism activity of its port. However, its attractions go beyond the port and fantastic beaches. This is a town that will captivate you with its megalithic monuments, its Iberian settlement and its old quarter, not to mention the beauty of a sweeping landscape that takes in the Gavarres massif and offers you stunning views of the Costa Brava.

LA BISBAL D'EMPORDÀ

Come and enjoy the city of La Bisbal d’Empordà, capital of Baix Empordà. Immerse yourself in the city’s history by strolling along the streets of the mediaeval quarter, zigzagging your way through the call (Jewish quarter) and admiring buildings constructed at the height of modernism. And, above all, discover a treasure that has made this town famous as the Catalan capital of ceramics: red clay. On Carrer de l’Aigüeta you’re spoilt for choice with shops, artisan workshops and exhibition rooms where you can admire and purchase the fruits of a trade as deeply rooted and renowned in La Bisbal as its music tradition and cobles (sardana orchestras).

GIRONA

It’s worth mentioning that Girona is not a city for just passing through; a one-day whistle stop tour doesn’t do it justice either. There are so many places to start your visit. At the cathedral, with its immense nave; along the labyrinthine streets of the call, the old Jewish quarter; at the Romanesque monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants; at the Gothic basilica of Sant Feliu; at the colourful houses and the bridge over the Onyar river; or at the huge city walls. So many years of history and culture are concentrated in the city that it’s best savoured at a leisurely pace.
